This album is one of very few to decipher the cultural and philosophical concepts underlying the placement of rocks, water, plants, artificial hills and decorative structures in private and imperial Chinese gardens. The author demonstrates, through images of both northern and southern gardens, some of which no longer exist in their original state, the influence of Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism on traditional garden design.
